Debarim (Deuteronomy)

The Second Law - Block 1: Chapters 1-17

Introduction

Shalum, Myshphaka

The Book of Debarim, known in English as Deuteronomy, meaning "second law," contains the final addresses of Moshe to Yashar'al before they entered the Promised Land. Delivered on the plains of Moab, these speeches review the covenant, restate the commandments, and call the people to faithful obedience to YAHUAH.

This is not merely a repetition of the Law given at Sinai, but a passionate appeal from Moshe to a new generation. He reminds them of YAHUAH's faithfulness, warns against idolatry, and sets before them the choice between barakah and curse, life and death.

May this reading of Debarim strengthen your understanding of the covenant and deepen your commitment to walk in the ways of YAHUAH.

Now, Myshphaka, let us continue the restored reading of Deuteronomy.

Moshe's First Address: Remembering the Journey

THE SETTING

1

These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the YAHUAH had given him in commandment unto them;

THE COMMAND TO DEPART

6

The YAHUAH our ALUAH spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:

Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:

But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the YAHUAH, we will go up and fight, according to all that the YAHUAH our ALUAH commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

And the YAHUAH said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the YAHUAH, and went presumptuously up into the hill.

Not Because of Righteousness

NOT BECAUSE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

1

Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to shamayim,

THE GOLDEN CALF

7

Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the YAHUAH thy ALUAH to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Mitsrayim, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the YAHUAH.

When the YAHUAH thy ALUAH hath cut off the nations, whose land the YAHUAH thy ALUAH giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;
